✨ About the Design - free hat and cowl crochet pattern
This cosy winter set includes:
A snug ribbed beanie: Made flat and seamed, this hat uses basic stitches and gets its stretchy texture from working in the back loops only. The stripes emerge naturally from the yarn, no colour changes needed!
A stylish buttoned cowl: Crocheted flat with the same ribbed texture, it features a clever fold-over design and secures with two chunky wooden buttons. It sits comfortably around the neck and adds a pop of colour to any winter outfit.
Both pieces shown in the photo are worked in James C. Brett Marble Chunky yarn, which gives that beautifully blended, multi-coloured effect. The yarn’s thick, squishy texture makes for fast progress and cosy results.

Pattern notes: Ch2 at the beginning of a row does not count as dc stitch.
To adjust the size of the hat or cowl, add or take away rows.
Hat: Ch 31 (or the required length of hat).
Row 1 From the 2nd ch from the hook, work 1sc in next 3 chs, 1 hdc in remaining 27 chs. (30 sts) Ch 1, turn.
Row 2 1hdc next 27 sts in the BACK LOOPS ONLY. 1sc in remaining 3 sts (both loops). Ch 1, turn.
Row 3 to1sc in next 3 sts, 1hdc in remaining 27 sts in BLO. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 4 to 35 Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you reach 35 rows
Bring the 2 sides of the hat together (starting row and row 35) and join by slip stitching them together. Turn the hat inside out so the joining seam is now on the inside. Fasten off leaving a long tail end. Using a darning needle, work a gathering stitch all the way around the sc edge and pull tightly to close over the hole at the top of the hat. Sew in the tail end securely.
Cowl: Ch 85 (or the desired length of the cowl)
Row 1 From 4th ch from the hook, work 1dc in each ch (82). Ch 2, turn.
Row 2 1dc in each st in the BLO. Ch 2, turn.
Rows 3 to 12 Repeat row 2. Fasten off and sew in tail ends securely. Sew on 2 large buttons, around 12 sts apart at the end of row 2. They should fit through the gaps on the stitches to secure the cowl.
